Taken for granted today, I do not know how people lived without them. The chamber maid was called by that name because she would empty out and clean the chamber pots used to go to the toilet in.
A disgusting job --- but some-one had to do it !
So what a relief it must have been to have the first flushing toilets installed. The first ones were used in 1851 for The Great Exhibition. The modern pedestal "flush-down" toilet was demonstrated in 1885 and the rest is history.
How much healthier and hygienic this invention !
