A Lady's Maid would have appreciated the invention of The Sewing Machine.
Spending hours sewing and altering her Ladyship's clothes, this must have seemed like a God-send, saving time as well as aching fingers.
Today we have the Electric sewing machine which is much faster and does a lot more.
Back then, the sewing machine was used by pressing pedals --- still much faster than sewing by hand. The sewing machine was invented in 1851. By the Edwardian Era, when electricity was starting to be installed, the first electric sewing machines started to appear, as shown in series four of Downton Abbey, when Lord Grantham had realized the benefits of having electricity installed "downstairs".
